Immersive software, built to ship.
I help teams design and build AR, VR, and mixed reality applications with Unity, from first prototype to a product people actually use. Ten years of building software at Microsoft.
Services
XR Product Development
Turn an XR concept into a working product. Start with discovery or a focused prototype to reduce risk, then continue through architecture, build, testing, and release on mobile AR, HoloLens, and headsets.
Unity Rescue & Modernization
Get a stalled or aging Unity project moving again: a clear assessment first, then stabilization, upgrades, and performance work with a realistic path back to shipping.
Backed by the web apps, APIs, cloud services, and digital twin integrations that immersive products depend on, often on Azure.

About
I'm Derek Freed, a software engineer. I spent ten years at Microsoft, most recently as a senior software engineer, helping teams turn complex ideas into working software and immersive experiences. My work spans mixed reality, Unity, web and cloud development, and AI-enabled products.
I do my best work where people meet the software: interactions, UX, and making complex system state make sense to the person in the headset or holding the phone.
Close to design
I've always worked alongside UX designers and artists, and I treat their intent as a requirement.
Prototype with purpose
Prototypes answer specific risks. The goal is a product that ships.
Honest about fit
If I'm not the right person for the work, I'll say so.
